Supervisor Education Program

The Department of Transportation (DOT) has specific guidelines about Supervisor Education and training about reasonable suspicion and reasonable cause testing. It requires the Supervisors to have training for noticing indicators of probable drug and alcohol abuse. In addition the FRA also requires Supervisors to have at least 1 hour of post-accident training.
In addition employers must follow other requirements that DOT Agencies and USCG rules have for supervisor education and training.

Covered Worker Education Program

The Department of Transportation (DOT) has specific guidelines about employee education and training regarding drug abuse at the work place.
Employers must provide employees who perform DOT safety-sensitive functions materials that explain the DOT requirements. It is also necessary for the employer to document that the employees have received the materials.
The workers should be educated about -
- The name and contact information of persons assigned to answer questions about the program.
- The duties of the employees who are subject to the program.
- Employee conduct that is prohibited by the regulations.
- The requirement that employees must be tested for drugs and alcohol.
- When and under what circumstances employees will be tested.
- Type of testing procedures that will be used.
- What constitutes a refusal to test?
- The consequences of refusing a test.
- The consequences of violating the DOT rules.
- The effects of drugs and alcohol on a person's health, work and personal life.
- The signs and symptoms of drug use and alcohol misuse.
- The name and contact information of an individual or organization that can provide counseling and access to treatment programs.
