What is a pre-employment drug test?

A pre-employment drug test screens potential employees for illicit drug consumption.  Inspectors check employee records to be sure such drug tests are performed prior to hire.

What is a random drug test?

Random drug tests are implemented in a drug misuse deterrence program to deter illicit drug use while an employee is employed. Ransom Drug Tests must meet the requirements of testing at least  50 percent of the worker pool every year for the FMSCA and FTA and at least 10 percent random alcohol tests per year.

What is a reasonable suspicion drug test?

A reasonable suspicion drug test or breath alcohol test is used when a manager or supervisor has evidence or sufficient cause to suspect that their employee is using drugs while working. Reasons that supervisors may use to determine whether an employee is under the influence includes: abnormal behavior, unable to complete tasks at work, slurred speech, and physical evidence of drugs.

What is a post-accident drug test?

As its name suggests, a post-accident drug test or alcohol is conducted when the employee is involved in a workplace incident. Drug tests should be conducted within 32 hours of the incident and a breath alcohol test is required to be completed up to 8 hours after the incident has occurred.  A urine drug test must be conducted for the FMCSA if there is a death related to the incident, if there is an injury treated away from the screen, or if the vehicle must be towed.

Urine Drug Tests and Breath Alcohol Tests to meet the needs of companies not regulated by the US DOT

Non Regulated companies who have safety requirements, can in addition to urine drug testing, can do Oral fluid Drug Testing.  Oral fluid drug tests will soon be approved by the US DOT

The major advantage of oral fluid drug testing is that the collection process is observed, there is no bathroom.

The collection Process is simple and you can do the collection in an office setting or at home.

The window of detection is shorter than for urine, but when companies switched from urine drug testing to oral fluid, more people were detected as positive.

Ethanol is detected in the saliva

The only metabolite not detected is eTG which is a liver metabolite that indicates alcohol has been ingested.
